Model portfolios
Model portfolios header
Nucleus offers comprehensive tools for creating and managing model portfolios. The platform also supports clients who want to have multiple portfolios per product, as well as hold investments in other platform funds outside of a model portfolio at the same time.
Models can be set up either by investment managers or by advisers. Once a model portfolio has been set up, you will be able to see this reflected on the platform, where a total valuation for the portfolio will be available. Rebalancing tools?
Adviser portfolios
The Nucleus Platform allows you to create, manage and update portfolios for your clients, including any rebalancing required. If you need support with this, please contact your Business Development Manager or take a look at the Adviser portfolio guide.
Investment Manager portfolios
Nucleus works with a large range of Investment Managers who offer managed portfolio services. These include trusted brand names in discretionary models who offer a range of strategies and risk profiles as well as supporting clients with relatively low value assets, at an affordable price. The options available are listed below.
There’s no charge for accessing the panel or for trading. The only charges that will apply are the investment managers charges (typically 0.25%) and our standard platform charges.
Once you have made your choice, just let the Investment Manager know that you want to be able to access the portfolio from the Nucleus Platform – they will take it from there. More detail about how this works is available in our Model Portfolio guide.
If you are an Investment Manager, you will be given access to the Nucleus X-Hub which you can use to create and manage portfolios. Support available in our X-Hub User Guide.

Platform Managed Portfolio Service
The five actively managed Platform Managed Portfolio Service (PMPS) investment strategies offer a high quality, affordable way for professional advisers to manage client assets on the James Hay platform.
The strategies are managed by our experienced Managed Portfolio investment team and benefit from our robust centralised investment process, which is designed to contain risk and volatility to acceptable levels, and to ensure that portfolios are managed within the chosen strategy’s mandated equity risk tolerance.
Each strategy (Defensive, Cautious, Balanced, Growth and Adventurous) has a different level of risk and potential return, with risk categorised by equity market exposure which increases in increments of 20% for each strategy.
Why PMPS
- Strategy asset allocation is actively managed and incorporates our Investment Committee’s tactical asset allocation decisions.
- Global investment approach which considers a wide range of asset classes.
- Investment strategies are monitored by our central Investment Committee to ensure consistency of performance from one portfolio to another.
- Portfolios benefit from the collective experience of our Investment Committee with an average experience of 20 years plus.
- Portfolios are positioned from a forward-looking perspective, often with a short-term tactical overlay in specific investment sectors.
- Portfolio diversification of between 20-30 individual holdings (dependent on the selected strategy).
- Models rebalanced at least quarterly to negate effects of portfolio ‘drift’.
- Investments held within the strategies are continually monitored by our Research team and replaced where concerns arise with regards to performance or positioning.
- Use of institutional share class investments where possible to help maintain a cost effective ongoing charges figure (‘OCF’).
- Performance benchmarked against Asset Risk Consultant Private Client Index (‘ARC PCI’) and 3-month London Inter Bank Offer Rate (‘LIBOR’) in the case of the lowest risk strategy (PMPS Defensive).
